29er Class Shines at Sun Hung Kai & Co. Hong Kong Race Week 2025: Day 3

Day 3 of the Sun Hung Kai & Co. Hong Kong Race Week 2025 brought a mix of challenges and excitement for the 29er fleet, which is competing for the prestigious 2025 29er Asian Championship.

The racing course, located northwest of Po Toi Island, faced a slow start due to near windless conditions. The first race was likened to “an oil painting” as boats were barely moving on flat waters under a bright sun. However, conditions steadily improved, turning into a “video” of dynamic and enjoyable racing as the day progressed.

Recognizing the unstable forecast for the following day, the race management team prioritized completing as many races as possible. By the end of the day, four races had been run, bringing the total tally to 12 races for the fleet.

The sibling duo of Tiffany Mak and Raphael Mak continued to dominate the competition, holding their lead over the American team of Kevin Cason and Holland Vierling. Thailand’s Patcharaphan Ongkaloy and Kan Kachachuen maintained third place in the overall standings.

Principal Race Officer Barry Truhol praised the resilience of the 29er fleet: “Just after 1430 hrs, the wind picked up and they had almost perfect sailing conditions for the last race of the day with 8 to 13 knots of north-easterly breeze. It was a great end to what had started out being a bit of a frustrating day.”

As the regatta heads into its final day, the stage is set for an exciting showdown with two races remaining.
